socks.

one cold day when i was a child, someone told me that clean socks were warmer than dirty socks.
does this mean that on a hot day dirty socks are cooler than clean socks?

Ha! This is one of those truths that are beyond simplistic logic. When you were a kid, I was the one that told you about clean sox being warmer than dirty sox. They are also cooler when they are clean.

They are warmer when clean because the fibers are better able to hold warmth when they are fluffy and unclogged by dirt and body oils. When it's hot and you want your sox to breathe, they will breathe less if clogged with dirt and oil, so your feet sweat and itch, not to mention smell because of the fermentation of bacteria.

If these words don't make you change your sox, I don't know what else to tell you, except: "Mom told you to put on clean sox!"
